Dedicated bike lanes?

A long time friend of mine sent me a link to what he thought was an entertaining video.  He thought (correctly) that I would amused because:

  • Old school 8-bit HUD
  • Old school gamer SFX (Super Mario Bros. coins, etc)
  • Dealt with motorcycling
  • Funny editing (again, gamer culture references)

What he didn’t realize is that the some of the same things that made it funny kinda concerned me.

I’ll be the first to admit that out of the many lands and peoples that have oriented and prospered in the eastern hemisphere of our small planet, Mandarin-speaking cultures I know the least about.  I’m not familiar with what city or country this is to be exact, but regardless of that, the dedicated bike lanes as shown in the video is all new to me as a working idea.

Working in the moto industry for many years, I’ve heard cagers say things like “motorcyclists should just ride in the bike lane” or “you guys should have your own lanes” and even “use the sidewalk!”  The latter being aimed at scooter riders.

Seriously.

I’ve never been able to articulate to someone who feels strongly enough to say something of that nature why that was such a bad idea; I just felt it in my gut.  After looking at the above video, I feel that my concerns have been verified.  Upon thinking more about it however, if there were to be motorcycle-only lanes, I’m not sure putting up plastic pylons would be the best way of going about it.  The poor chap in the video suffered from target fixation and what is to keep someone in a car or truck from doing the same thing?

I’m not going to get into the pros and cons of those pylons here, but I am interested in seeing what other folks think about the dedicated lanes.  In asking Mr. Google about it, there seems to be a number of eastern countries that have adopted some form of lane segregation for folks on two wheels.  The results have been mixed according to what I’ve read.

What do you think?

OH, and here’s the Mario Fail remix of video that was originally sent to me.
